John's history:

John is the oldest of the Parren boys. I really like John's genetics, so I'll mention that here too. His father is mixed black/native american and his mother is hispanic.

His mother and father married young, and they seemed to be very much in love. However, his mother's wild streak started to show itself when he was about 6 months old. Some say she had post-postpartum depression, others say she was always like that and just hiding that side of herself from the world before. Whatever the reason, she started to become a real party animal. At one of those parties, she met another man (who later became John's brother Eric's father). When she was pregnant with Eric, John's father found out about the affair, left the two of them and committed suicide. His mother married Eric's father before Eric was born. John was about 3 by this time.

So, for a large chunk of his younger childhood, Eric's father acted as John's father. His mother tamed her wild ways around this man. However, he didn't tame his ways. He would go out and party and leave his wife and boys at home nearly every night. As fate would have it, he had a fling with another woman. Well, it started as a fling. It didn't take long to turn into a full-blown affair, and he ended up leaving John and Eric's mother for the other woman.

About this time, John's mother started turning to drugs and alcohol to deal with the tragedies in her life. While at one of the wilder parties she went to, she met the man that would become Jonah's father. John was about 8 and Eric about 5 by this time. The mother and Jonah's father married, and the two of them would have very wild parties at their house that would often last late into the night. Eric started turning to John to view as a "father figure" as much as he was able. Baby Jonah would've gone mostly ignored had it not been for John and Eric.

One morning, the boys' mother woke up to find that Jonah's father was gone. They wondered for years what happened to him. Their mother went off the deep end, and drugs became the main thing in her life... it didn't matter what kind. Growing up in this horrible environment, John swore to himself he would keep this kind of life from happening to anyone else if he could. Thus, he became a police officer.

While John was attending the academy, Eric stepped up and became Jonah's "dad", but there's more of that in Jonah's tab.

Jonah's father would periodically show up only to leave again. About 3 years before Elena comes into the picture, their mother overdoses. There's a brief period of time where John is the legal guardian of Jonah, even though Eric acts more the part.

So, then, John becomes a police officer, and he meets Elena at the bar, Leo's. He secretly knew Elena had been seeing Greg Turner, Jonah's best friend, but he knew Greg would be bad for her. So, he took his opportunity while Greg was working on a divorce from Betty (the only gray-haired lady in the pic at the top) and pretty much snatched Elena out from under Greg's nose.

This later comes back to bite him in the ass. Greg convinces Elena that she still loves him. John finds out, and beats the crap out of Greg. Then, after Elena convinces Greg to leave (she hoped that would calm John down) John can only think of his horrible mother when he sees Elena and what she's done to him. In a fit of rage, he beats her up as well. Elena leaves him.

This is a very dark time in John's life. Elena gains custody of the children. (She'd adopted Marie while she was still seeing Greg, though John had been the only father figure in Marie's life. Xavier is his biological child, but he views both children as his.) He only gets to see them every other weekend, and the divorce lawyer orders him into counseling. Unbeknownst to him, Elena felt terrible about how much custody she had, and worked out another agreement, much to his surprise, where they would go one week off, one week on. Elena didn't know it, but it was this move that finally got John to separate her from the idea of his mother. His counseling helps him even more, and he suffers with horrible guilt from what he did to Elena.

There was a brief period of time when John entertained hopes of getting Elena back from Greg, but when he hears that she's pregnant with Greg's child, he heartbreakingly decides to put those plans to a halt. He does, however, work hard on re-establishing a friendship with Elena. She readily forgives him for what he did to her, much to his surprise.

John knew about Greg's affair with Sylvia long before Elena did, but he didn't want to be the one to tell her. He didn't want it to seem like he was only telling her to get her back, and although that would've made things really easy for him, he didn't want to win her back in that method. Still, it bothered him that Elena didn't know.

When Elena did find out, however, John eagerly jumped in to be there for her. He worked hard at walking the fine line of just being her friend, yet secretly hoping they'd divorce, but knowing that that might not be what Elena wanted, and trying hard not to encourage them to separate. (run-on, I know) When Greg left her, John did his best not to dance around in a happy circle. (excitable trait) He impatiently waited for their divorce before he amorously pursued her.

However, Greg didn't get completely out of the picture, much to his chagrin. Elena dated both men, driving the two of them crazy. Things nearly came to blows several times, but she was good at fielding those land mines and kept it from happening.

Then there came about the "Laurie fiasco". John had been in the process of tracking this criminal, but he was one slippery little devil. John could find no proof of or anything to nail him on. That is, until Laurie kidnapped Elena. John eventually came to the rescue and saved her, and now, as I write this, he's unraveling the tangled mess his involvement in this rescue has caused him. plus some....
